Erode District has created a historic literacy milestone by achieving a World Records title for the “Most Participants Reading Books Simultaneously at Multiple Venues,” with an extraordinary 2,06,760 participants taking part across 519 venues throughout the district.
The record-setting initiative was organised as part of the 22nd Edition of the Erode Book Festival 2026, held celebrating knowledge, literacy and the joy of reading on an unprecedented scale.
A phenomenal 2,06,760 participants simultaneously engaged in book reading at 519 different venues spread across Erode District. The massive participation demonstrated the district’s commitment to promoting reading habits and strengthening a culture of learning among people of different age groups and backgrounds. By coordinating hundreds of venues at the same time, the initiative transformed the Erode Book Festival into a district-wide celebration of books and literacy.
The record attempt was organised by the Erode District Administration, in association with the Department of School Education and the People’s Thinkers Forum, with the support and patronage of Milky Mist Dairy Food Limited. The initiative brought together educational institutions, students, teachers, volunteers and members of the wider community in a shared effort to encourage reading and intellectual development.
The event was conceived and executed under the leadership of Kandasamy S., IAS, District Collector of Erode, and was coordinated under the supervision of Shantha Kumar S., District Revenue Officer, Erode District. Their leadership played a central role in coordinating the large-scale participation across hundreds of venues and ensuring the successful execution of the record attempt.
The Erode Book Festival has long served as a platform for encouraging literacy, literature and intellectual exchange. The 2026 edition added a historic achievement to its legacy by bringing more than two lakh readers together in a single synchronized activity. The record demonstrated how community participation, educational institutions and district administration can work together to promote reading as a lifelong habit. With 2,06,760 participants reading simultaneously across 519 venues, Erode District has established a remarkable benchmark in mass literacy participation and added a prestigious World Records achievement to the Erode Book Festival 2026.
