A standard Porsche Cayenne S Diesel demonstrated extraordinary towing power by pulling an enormous Airbus A380 aircraft at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport, earning a World Records title for the “Heaviest Aircraft Pulled by a Production Car.”
The remarkable feat took place in 2017, when the production SUV successfully moved an Air France Airbus A380 weighing approximately 285 tonnes, proving that an everyday road-going vehicle could handle an extraordinary load.
The challenge paired two very different machines: a Porsche Cayenne S Diesel and one of the world’s largest passenger aircraft. Powered by a diesel engine producing approximately 385 horsepower, the Cayenne was essentially a standard production vehicle. A special towing attachment was connected to the SUV’s regular tow bar to link it with the aircraft. Despite the enormous difference in size and weight, the Porsche successfully pulled the Airbus along the ground, completing the record-breaking challenge.
The Airbus A380 involved in the attempt measured approximately 73 metres in length and weighed around 285 tonnes for the record attempt. The achievement was particularly impressive because the Cayenne itself measured less than five metres long, yet managed to move an aircraft many times its own size and weight. The successful attempt earned Porsche the World Records title for the heaviest aircraft pulled by a production car.
Even Porsche’s team was uncertain about whether the SUV would be capable of completing such an extreme task. After the successful pull, Porsche GB technician Richard Payne expressed his relief that the attempt had worked as planned. The achievement demonstrated the Cayenne S Diesel’s immense pulling capability while providing Porsche with an unusual place in automotive record history.
The record remains one of Porsche’s most spectacular demonstrations of vehicle strength, combining a production SUV with the enormous scale of an Airbus A380. By successfully moving the massive aircraft, the Porsche Cayenne S Diesel showed that a production vehicle could accomplish a towing challenge far beyond what drivers would normally encounter on the road.
