The global mountaineering community is mourning the loss of legendary Nepali climber Nirmal “Nimsdai” Purja, who tragically died in an avalanche on Broad Peak in Pakistan at the age of 43. The incident occurred while Purja was leading a 10-member international expedition on the Karakoram peak. His company, Elite Expeditions, confirmed that fellow Nepali climbers Pur Bahadur Gurung and Nima Sherpa also lost their lives in the tragedy.
Born in Myagdi, Nepal, in July 1983, Purja began his career in the British Army’s Brigade of Gurkhas before serving in the elite UK Special Boat Service (SBS) as a cold-weather warfare specialist. After leaving military service in 2018, he dedicated himself to professional mountaineering and rapidly became one of the world’s most celebrated climbers through a series of record-breaking expeditions.
Purja achieved international acclaim by setting multiple world records, including climbing all 14 peaks above 8,000 metres in a record time, redefining what was considered humanly possible in high-altitude mountaineering. His extraordinary endurance, courage, and determination inspired climbers across the globe and elevated Nepal’s reputation in the world of adventure sports.
