British adventurer Graham Hughes has shared fascinating stories from his record-breaking travels around the globe, including how his extraordinary journey led to him being arrested and jailed more than once. Hughes revisited his adventures during an appearance on the World Records podcast What’s The Record?

In 2009, Hughes achieved the record for the most countries visited in one year by scheduled surface transport. Beginning his journey in Uruguay and finishing in Egypt, the fearless traveller visited an incredible 133 countries without taking a single flight.

Under the rules of the challenge, Hughes could travel only by scheduled surface transportation, requiring him to rely on buses, trains, boats, and other regularly operating services. The restrictions turned an already ambitious journey into an extraordinary test of planning, endurance, and adaptability.

His travels were filled with unexpected experiences, from crossing international borders and navigating unfamiliar destinations to encounters that resulted in him being detained and jailed. Hughes later added another unusual chapter to his life when he won a private island through a reality television show.
