Four fathers from East Devon are preparing to attempt a World Record by completing a unique English Channel relay swim, with each swimmer using a different stroke. The team—Nik Haynes, Olly White, Ross Szender, and Adam Tapp—will take on the iconic challenge on 27 August, combining endurance, teamwork, and philanthropy to support Hospiscare.
Known on social media as Channel Medley Relay 2026, the quartet will each specialize in a different swimming discipline: backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, and freestyle. Their ambitious attempt aims to establish the fastest relay crossing of the English Channel using all four competitive strokes, creating a new milestone in open-water swimming.
Beyond the pursuit of a world record, the swimmers are undertaking the challenge to raise vital funds and awareness for Hospiscare, a charity providing compassionate care and support to people with terminal illnesses and their families. Their effort highlights the power of sport to inspire community support and make a meaningful social impact.
Adding a unique historical connection to the expedition is the team’s “secret weapon,” massage therapist Heidi Bell-West, whose great-great-great uncle was Captain Matthew Webb, the first person to successfully swim across the English Channel. The inspiring relay blends sporting ambition, teamwork, and charitable purpose as the four fathers prepare to make history.
