Team USA produced a remarkable record-breaking performance at the 2026 Para Pan Pacific Swimming Championships, with American swimmers Katie Kubiak, Leanne Smith and Evan Wilkerson setting world records during the three-day competition.
The championships saw world records fall across multiple classifications, highlighted by Kubiak’s performance in the S5 50m butterfly, Smith’s record in the S3 100m freestyle and Wilkerson’s spectacular double world-record swim in the S11 100m backstroke.
Katie Kubiak, a 23-year-old swimmer from Cedarburg, Wisconsin, clocked 37.21 seconds in the women’s S5 50m butterfly on Friday, improving the previous world record by nearly one second. Kubiak also broke three American records during the same day. The achievement continued an impressive run for Kubiak, who broke four world records in the S4 classification at the 2025 U.S. Championships before winning seven medals, including four individual golds, during her World Championships debut.
Five-time Paralympic medalist Leanne Smith also delivered a record-breaking performance on Friday. Smith completed the S3 100m freestyle in 1:26.17, improving her own world record despite the challenge of competing in an outdoor environment. The result added another major achievement to Smith’s decorated international Para swimming career.
On the final day, Evan Wilkerson produced one of the standout performances of the championships in the men’s S11 100m backstroke. Wilkerson initially established a world-record time of 1:04.84 in the preliminaries. He returned for the final and went considerably faster, recording 1:02.62 to lower the mark by more than two additional seconds. The final performance was reported as pending classification review. Wilkerson had been reclassified from S12 to S11 approximately one month before the competition.
The championships also marked the introduction of financial incentives for U.S. Para swimmers through Paralympic swimmer Ali Truwit’s Stronger Than You Think Performance Incentive Fund. Under the initiative, each eligible world-record performance earned $10,000, while podium finishes at designated competitions also carried financial awards. Truwit competed at the championships herself, securing two runner-up finishes and breaking her own American record in the S10 100m backstroke.
With Katie Kubiak, Leanne Smith and Evan Wilkerson all producing world-record performances, the 2026 Para Pan Pacific Championships became a memorable competition for American Para swimming. Their achievements highlighted Team USA’s strength across multiple classifications while building momentum on the road toward the Los Angeles 2028 Paralympic Games.
