India’s First Highway Section Built with Plastic Waste Geocell Earns World Record

In a landmark achievement for sustainable infrastructure and circular economy innovation, CSIR–Central Road Research Institute (CSIR-CRRI) and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), with the support of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), have set a World Record for constructing the First Roadblock Section Using Technical Textiles Geocell Made from End-of-Life Plastic.

The record-breaking road section was constructed at 10:00 A.M. on Loop No. 1 of the elevated stretch of the DND–Faridabad–KMP Expressway, near DND, New Delhi. The project utilized an innovative Geocell technical textile manufactured from end-of-life plastic waste, demonstrating an eco-friendly approach to road construction while promoting the reuse of plastic that would otherwise contribute to environmental pollution.

This pioneering initiative showcases how advanced engineering and sustainable materials can be effectively integrated into national infrastructure projects. By converting plastic waste into high-performance geocell technology, the project enhances the strength, stability, and durability of road structures while supporting environmentally responsible construction practices.
