Hank, a 16-year-old American Mammoth Donkey, has officially earned a World Records title for having the longest ears on a living donkey, turning a casual family measurement into a remarkable world record achievement. Hank belongs to Jennifer Gee and her husband, Ed, who discovered his extraordinary ear length almost by accident after coming across information about the previous World Records holder.
Jennifer Gee has a lifelong connection with farm animals. She grew up around horses, mules and donkeys and, together with her husband, later began raising donkeys of their own. Hank joined the family about five years ago after Gee encountered him at a local breeder. Although he was not originally for sale, Hank immediately approached her and followed her around the pasture, creating an instant connection.
Years later, while browsing a Facebook group dedicated to donkeys, Gee came across an article about the World Record for the longest ears on a living donkey. Her husband suggested that Hank’s ears appeared longer than the existing record of approximately 15 inches. The couple measured them for fun and discovered that Hank’s ears were more than three inches longer.
What began as a joke soon developed into a serious record application. According to Gee, obtaining official recognition took around a year and involved extensive documentation and verification. The certification process required measurements involving a licensed veterinarian and experienced livestock witnesses, along with photographs, videos and additional evidence submitted for review. After completing the detailed verification process, Hank was officially recognised as the new record holder.
Hank is an American Mammoth Donkey, a breed large enough to be ridden. At 16 years old, he has already participated in trail competitions, visited horse show grounds and fairs, and travelled along public equestrian trails. His unusually long ears have attracted attention for years, with people frequently commenting on their impressive size even before his world record recognition. According to Gee, Hank is also exceptionally friendly and enjoys interacting with people.
There was no formal awards ceremony following Hank’s recognition, but Gee said plans were being made for a virtual handover with the previous record holder. For the family, the achievement is less about financial reward and more about celebrating Hank’s unique characteristic and personality. Now officially recognised for his extraordinary ears, Hank has transformed from a much-loved family donkey into a world record holder, giving his owners and local community another reason to celebrate their gentle giant.
