Corey Alston, a master basket weaver from Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, has earned a World Records title for creating the largest sweetgrass basket in the world. The remarkable achievement was celebrated by the South Carolina State Museum, recognizing both Alston’s exceptional craftsmanship and the rich cultural legacy of the Gullah community.
Named “Big Percy,” the record-breaking basket was officially measured by Cox & Dinkins Inc., recording impressive dimensions of 44.1 inches in length, 43.3 inches in width, and 52.6 inches in height. The monumental creation showcases the intricate artistry and traditional weaving techniques that have been passed down through generations of Gullah artisans.
