Showcasing engineering excellence and strengthening India’s inland waterway infrastructure, Larsen & Toubro Limited, Katni, Madhya Pradesh, has set a World Record for constructing the Largest Multi-Gate Navigation Lock System.
Awarded the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contract by the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI), Larsen & Toubro GeoStructure successfully executed the New Navigational Lock Gate Project at Farakka on National Waterway-1. The project features a state-of-the-art 179 m × 25.148 m navigation lock system, equipped with hydraulically operated Mitre, Caisson, Bulkhead, and Radial gates, engineered to deliver reliable performance over a 30-year service life.
Constructed using shipbuilding-quality steel, the advanced lock system enables the smooth and efficient movement of vessels across varying water levels while ensuring safe navigation, effective water regulation, and streamlined maintenance operations. The project represents a significant milestone in the modernization of India’s inland waterways and enhances the country’s capability for sustainable and efficient water transport.
