World Athletics Ratifies World Records by Jacob Kiplimo, Ja’Kobe Tharp and Emmanuel Wanyonyi

World Athletics has officially ratified three outstanding world-record performances by Jacob Kiplimo, Ja’Kobe Tharp and Emmanuel Wanyonyi, recognizing their achievements in the half marathon, 110m hurdles and 1000m respectively.

Uganda’s Jacob Kiplimo clocked 57 minutes 20 seconds at the EDP Lisbon Half Marathon on 8 March. Competing without pacemakers, Kiplimo passed 5km in 13:28 and reached 10km alongside Nicholas Kipkorir in 27:00. After reaching 15km in 40:52, Kiplimo increased the pace and eventually crossed the finish line in a record-breaking 57:20.

The performance improved by 10 seconds on the previous ratified world record of 57:30, set by Ethiopia’s Yomif Kejelcha in Valencia in October 2024. Kejelcha has since run an even faster 56:51 in Buenos Aires, although that performance remains subject to the official ratification process.

American hurdler Ja’Kobe Tharp delivered a remarkable performance at the NCAA Championships in Eugene on 10 June, clocking 12.75 seconds in the men’s 110m hurdles. The 20-year-old achieved the record during the semifinals, significantly improving his previous best of 13.01 seconds. Tharp’s 12.75 performance broke the previous world record of 12.80 seconds, which had been held by fellow American Aries Merritt.

Kenya’s Emmanuel Wanyonyi became the first athlete in almost 27 years to break the men’s 1000m world record when he clocked 2:11.83 at the Wanda Diamond League meeting in Monaco on 10 July. Making his debut over the distance, Wanyonyi followed the pacemakers through 400m in 50.95 and 800m in 1:45.11 before moving into the lead.

He held off Britain’s Jake Wightman, who finished second in 2:12.77, to secure the record. Wanyonyi’s time improved on the previous 2:11.96 world record, set by fellow Kenyan Noah Ngeny in Rieti on 5 September 1999. The ratification of the three performances recognizes a remarkable series of achievements across road running, hurdles and middle-distance athletics.
